SGA expects bigger participation for Senior Amateur Open

10th March, 2018

By UMESH RAJAN

KOTA KINABALU: Attractive prizes await the winners of the 8th Sabah SGA Senior Amateur Open scheduled to tee off next week in Tawau.

Hole-in-one prizes are offered at the Par 3s hole No.3 and No.14 where the organiser is offering up to RM5,000 each while a one-year term membership at the golf club for golfers striking an ace in any of the Par 3s.

More than 100 senior golfers are set to part take in the tournament to be held at the Shan-Shui Golf & Country Club from March 17 to 18.

Sabah Golf Association (SGA) President, Datuk George Bandusena said he is confident that this year’s Open will outnumber last year’s tournament whereby a total of 106 senior golfers took part.

“Last year, the tournament was held at the Borneo Golf Resort with 106 participants from Sarawak, Brunei, Singapore, Peninsular Malaysia as well as our local Sabahans.

“This year, we are expecting more than 100 players to participate which include the defending Men’s champion Desmond Jong together with other past winners such as Ian Quek, Datu Goldah Keri, Ng Loong Fah, Yong Yau Phin, Peter Wong, Jesus Arapoc,” he said in a statement, yesterday.

The defending champion for the Ladies category is the experienced state golfer, Rokia Daud.

“I urge those interested in participating to sign up as soon as possible as available slots are expected to fill up quickly.

“Therefore, we expect the Open’s eighth edition to be interesting and challenging for the local golfers,” added George.

The tournament is open to all amateur golfers with current handicap index of 19.8 or below for men aged below 55 years (born in 1963 or earlier); 33.0 or below for ladies of age above 45 years (born 1973 or earlier); and 30.1 or below for Men Super Senior of age 65 and above (born 1953 or earlier).

George thanked all the sponsors especially Shan-Shui Golf & Country Club for providing such a beautiful and challenging course for the tournament where course conditions are expected to be fairly excellent during the tournament.

The tournament will serve as a platform to select men golfers to represent Sabah for the upcoming Senior SGA Cup (Sabah vs Sarawak) to be played in Sarawak later in the year. Closing date is on March 12 at 3pm, while for more information do contact Sabah Golf Association office at 088-318133 or Peter Koh (Manager SGA) at 011-32123039 or Ms. Edna of Shan-Shui Golf & Country Club at 089-705969.
