Family of five participate in ‘Run & Ride for Papar’

13th March, 2018

PAPAR: It was a fun ride indeed for a family of five who got up at the crack of dawn to take part in the ‘Run and Ride for Papar’ on Sunday.

Unlike most runners, Roland Ripah, 39, and his wife Geraldine Balandong, 35, decided to bring their sons along to go on a 13km fun ride as part of their weekend activity.

“My husband and I had always participated in running events and our children loved such activities as well. “This is the second time that we bring our children on a bicycle riding event,” said Geraldine.

While she and eight-year-old Duentzer Gaddiel rode a bicycle each, Roland rode a tandem bicycle with Xymon Gamaliel, 5, seated at the back and one-year-old Garberend Markmichael sitting in a bucket in front.

They were among the 1,000 participants from across the state who took part in the programme organised by 20th Event Management and Papar Parliament at SK Beringgis here Sunday.

The event comprised four categories, namely 4km Fun Run, 13km Competitive Run, 13km Fun Ride and 27km Fun Ride.

Officiating the programme was Deputy Works Minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin. During her speech, Rosnah stated that the location was chosen to promote Papar Sports Complex in Beringgis which will see a field, running tracks and a grandstand in its first phase of construction.

She disclosed that the Ministry of Youth and Sports will appoint consultants for land treatments among others.

“We hope that the second phase of the construction will complement the overall infrastructure required for a complex as we are hoping for a sports complex to make Papar district a sports hub.”

She added that it suits the district due to its strategic location that not only borders the state capital but also Sipitang, Beaufort and Kimanis.

According to her, the programme was also a platform of unity apart from promoting healthy lifestyle among the people.

“This, at the same time, upholds the 1Malaysia aspiration to cross the borders of religion, race and politics through sports as a platform to enhance national integration particularly for us in Papar,” said Rosnah who is also Papar Member of Parliament.

Also present were Infrastructure Development Assistant Minister Datuk Ghulam Haidar Khan Bahadar and Kawang community development leader Datuk Juil Nuatim.
