KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) will soon have a ‘teaching resort’ – the first in the country that will take students learning in a hotel environment.

This is made possible by a joint collaboration between UMS and Traverse Tours Sdn Bhd in developing the tourism industry.

Yesterday, both parties signed a memorandum of understanding to work out the details for the teaching resort. UMS vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr D Kamarudin D Mudin signed for the university while Traverse Tours by its managing director, Dares Saham.

Elaborating on the tie-up, D Kamarudin said it would be a value-added experience for students furthering their studies in the hotel industry.

“This is also part of the goals of the Ministry of Higher Education which has pushed for the development of ‘industry in campus’ concept,” he said.

The teaching resort once completed will have 30 eco-friendly chalets that are equipped with restaurant and spa. “It will attract tourists to stay with us as the facility will be by the sea,” he said adding that it would be unique as the teaching resort would be in the campus.

The collaboration is timely as Sabah is enjoying rapid development in the tourism industry.

The teaching resort will be built near the Faculty of Business, Economy and Accounting.

Present were UMS Board of Directors, chairman Tun Zaki Tun Azmi and Mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai.
