Shafie: I have to run the state, help the poor…

16th May, 2018

PUTATAN: There are more important things to do for the State rather than responding to issues relating to illegal immigrants said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal.

Refusing to respond to STAR president Datuk Jeffrey Kitingan’s statement on the possibility of immigrants to get MyKad from the Warisan government, Shafie described such claim as ‘silly’.

“I have way more important things to do; running the State, helping the poor (and) developing the State rather than responding to this silly kind of statement.”

Jeffrey recently claimed that despite KDM people being angry when he decided to join Tan Sri Musa Aman, he remained with his decision after hearing that many illegals were celebrating Warisan’s win on the streets.

This was because the Warisan government, he said, would possibly allow immigrants with work passes and IMM13 documents to get citizenship through MyKad.

According to Shafie, he was not even in the government and did not have the authority to approve the entry of illegals in Sabah.

“Well, I was not there in the government to approve; I don’t have the authority to get all the illegals coming in…In the whole year his brother was in charge, why he blames me?”

He was speaking to reporters after the Inauguration Ceremony of Ru’yah Hilal Ramadhan year of 1439H/2018 at al-Biruni Observatory here yesterday.

Earlier in his speech, he stated that it was important to make use of available facilities to conduct the ‘rukyah’ (sighting of the new moon) and ‘hisab’ (calculation) to determine the date for the start of Ramadhan fast.

“The rukyah and hisab are crucial in Islam and it is the responsibility of those who has the knowledge to guide Muslims towards the right path.”

Shafie, along with the designated committee went to sight for the new moon at 6.24pm yesterday before State Mufti Datuk Bungsu Aziz Jaafar delivered the report to the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal.

Also present were Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Ramli Din, Deputy State Mufti Hamdani Omar, Pantai Manis Assemblyman Datuk Aidi Mokhtar and Petagas Assemblyman Uda Sulai.
