IMechE-University of Southampton Malaysia Student Chapter hosts Speak Out for Engineering Event

25th May, 2018

ISKANDAR PUTERI, JOHOR: The Institution of Mechanical Engineers – University of Southampton Malaysia Campus (IMechE-USMC) Student Chapter held its ‘Speak Out for Engineering (SOfE)’ Internal Heat event on 16 April 2018 and students were invited to give a presentation on a mechanical engineering related subject.

Among the many entries received, six students qualified in the competition. Each contestant prepared a written presentation summary and then gave a 20-minute oral presentation followed by discussion and questions from the judges.

Prof. Neil Stephen, Professor of Structural Mechanics who judged the event said, “This competition is an excellent opportunity for students to develop their presentation skills, which are essential when they enter the workplace. We had six students participating this year and as expected the calibre of students was very high; Dr Beh Shiao Lin and I had a difficult decision to make but we felt that Nixshal’s presentation stood out because of his obvious passionate interest in the subject.’

Nixshal Nantakumar winner of the 2018 SOfE competition’s presentation was titled ‘Electronic Fluency Devices: Snuffing the Stutter’. Although this was a personal subject for Nixshal, he felt that it would open eyes towards the issue of stuttering that over 70 million people suffer from, whilst highlighting the positive impact that a technical solution can bring.

When talking about his experience presenting Nixshal said, “I have not entered a public speaking competition before and this was a great opportunity for me to learn more about myself and the art of presenting. There are opportunities to test your presentation skills in Year 1 and I’m glad I joined this competition as it showed me the power of words” he went on to say “I would recommend students to join contests like these as it takes you out of your comfort zone and ultimately improves your communication skills”

Nixshal is a Year 1 mechanical engineering student and a Yayasan Khazanah scholar. The next step for Nixshal is the SOfE National Level Heat event happening in June or July this year.

There were two runners up in this year’s competition: Ivan Ling, a PhD student, won second prize for his presentation on nanorobots and Teyo Zhe Yong, a Year 2 mechanical engineering student whose presentation is about smart devices in healthcare.
