KOTA KINABALU: The 4th Kiulu Adventure Challenge (KAC) that promises to bring out the athletic best in the participants is set to take place at Mini Dataran Kiulu, Pekan Kiulu on December 2, starting at 6am.

President of KTA, Dr Edmon Guntis said that running and cycling are individual events open to men, women and veterans while the four-member team challenge category must feature one woman or veteran man age 40 and above in the line-up.

“The course is designed to be moderately challenging to target amateur runners, cyclists and family oriented white water rafting activities from enthusiasts from all over Sabah as well as Sarawak, Labuan Peninsula as well as international participants.”

Edmon told reporters at a press conference here, yesterday.

Besides having fun with challenging activities, winners for all categories stand to win good reward. Running and cycling categories offered RM300 for winner, RM250 for 2nd place, RM200 for third place and fourth and fifth will receive RM150 and RM100, respectively.

KAC was established in 2015 through an initiative by Kiulu Assemblyman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, in order to promote Kiulu as a recreation and adventure destination which later becomes an annual event.

The uniqueness of the challenge according to Edmon, are their objectives to establish cooperation and closer relation with the village community and the tourism sector. The idea is to enhance the promotion of cross country trekking, cycling, water rafting, homestay and other related tourism activities. It also wants to support and raise awareness on the importance of conserving the river and fish stocks for the benefits of the community.

In its first year, KAC received about 706 participations and visitors. The following year (2016) it witnessed 800 participants and visitors as well as the introduction of Kiulu Mini Carnival to promote local products. Last year, it recorded 632 pax of participants alone and about 2,000 visitors.

“The committee hopes the number will increase this year and receive more international participation. “Thus, we are calling the members of public to join us. Registration is open until September 30. Early birds registration will last until July 31.

“If you come from far, don’t worry, there are plenty of homestays, chalets and lodge provided at Kiulu.”
