Boxing – Team Kota Kinabalu dethrone Tuaran

6th August, 2018

By FRANCIS XAVIER

KOTA KINABALU: Team Kota Kinabalu emerged as the overall champs of the West Coast Zone Sabah Amateur Boxing Association President Datuk Orlando Harumal Cup Tournament that ended at the Luyang multipurpose hall, near here yesterday.

They clinched the crown after hauling two gold medals, a silver and a bronze to eventually deny Tuaran from defending the title.

Tuaran had to settle for second best this time around after concluding their two-day challenge with two gold and a silver.

Papar with one gold and two silver medals were third followed by fourth placed Kota Belud with one gold and a silver while Ranau were fifth with a single silver.

Kota Kinabalu coach Adzlin Ganis said most of his boxers were freshies, and that they have been undergoing training for the past one month.

“We have been training for the last one month … like three days a week,” he said when met after the prize presentation.

The gold medals for Kota Kinabalu were contributed by Barandon Yapp in the 60kg division and Irwandi Jusori in the 64kg division.

Similar tournaments were also held in other zones for pitting districts under East Coast and Interior. These tournaments (zone-level) are part of the build-up to the state main’s boxing tournament – the All-Sabah Mayor Cup Boxing Championship – which will be held later this year.

Long-serving Sabah Amateur Boxing Association president Datuk Orlando Harumal presented the prizes to the winners.
