Sabah armwrestlers gunning for title

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Armwrestling Association (SAWA) is parading a squad of 24 athletes, including four women, to compete at the Malaysia Armwrestling Championship 2018 that will be happening at the FTMS College in Cyberjaya, this Saturday (August 11).

Its deputy president Jolly Johnson said they have prepared well for the one-day championship and hope that their athletes will do well.

He said they have set a target of winning the overall title at the inaugural national tournament.

“It is our hope that the Sabah team can emerge as the overall national champions. In line with that, we want our athletes to set themselves a target of winning their respective categories,” said Jolly when contacted yesterday.

“On behalf of the association and the team, I would like to express our sincere thanks to Shamrock Irish Bar that is located at The Waterfront for generously sponsoring our official tee-shirt to the championship,” he added.

On the other hand, a representative from the outlet, said: “Shamrock Irish Bar @ The Waterfront is proud to sponsor the Sabah Armwrestling Team for the 2018 National Armwrestling Championship, and we wish them all the best.”

Jolly, who will captain the stateside, is among the competing athletes where he will compete in two categories namely the men’s master 90kg and senior 95kg category.

His promising son, Joffey, who has won numerous accolades at national and international level, will also be competing, where he has been entered to compete in the men’s senior 70-78kg category.

Michael Ford from Kota Kinabalu will also make the trip and will be competing in the men’s senior +95kg category alongside four other team-mates, who will also feature in the weight division.

They are Calveen Petrus and Artobelly Evali (both from Penampang), Johnnie James Majanau (Papar), and Esmond Ampilah (Tuaran).

As for George Johnson from Inanam, he will also be competing in the same weight division, but in the master category while Francis Sayah of Tuaran will feature in the master 90kg category.

Sabah’s other contestant in the master category is Andrew Wong of Penampang, who will compete in the 70kg category.

The rest of the athletes are Jivander Lonni (Telipok/men’s senior 78-86kg), Raymond Wong (Telipok/men’s senior 60-70kg), Denny Maison(Sepanggar/men 60-70kg), Micky Cheah (Sepanggar/junior 60-70kg), Danield Eku (Tuaran/junior 70-80kg), Royall Richall (Sepanggar/junior 70-80kg), Jonathan Junin (Sepanggar/junior +80kg), Afifuddin Sumbarani (Sepanggar/junior +80kg), Alvian Ally (Sepangga/junior 60kg), Danny Roy (Kuala Penyu/junior 60kg).

The four women competitors are Chandra Majanan (Penampang/60-70kg), Nesurey Petrus Lojuyo (Penampang/50-60kg), Norlisa Binti Rusly (Keningau/70-80kg) and Fredda Beniji Freddy (Penampang/80kg).
