SANDAKAN: Sabah opened their campaign in the National Under-16 Hockey Championship by edging Sarawak 2-1 at the Sandakan Sports Complex here yesterday.

Sabah’s goals were scored by Duni (7th minute) and Mohd Afiq Japli (58th while Baniela Lihim replied for Sarawak in the 30th minute.

Meanwhile, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Peter Pang En Yin said that the district is proud to be chosen as hosts of the on-going tournament.

Expressing gratitude to the Malaysian Hockey Federation, he said he was aware of the significance of the tournament which is to be used as a scouting ground for fresh talents to be selected to don the national colours in a world stage.

“I was made to understand that this will be a selection ground for the U-16 National hockey squad for the world meet in Germany,” he said when launching the opening ceremony here yesterday.

A total of 13 teams including Singapore are taking part in the tournament.
