KOTA KINABALU: About 40 children aged four years and above attended the Sabah Golf and Country Club (SGCC) Junior Golf Open Day held at the golf course in Bukit Padang, near here on June 9.

During the open day held in conjunction with SGCC’s Junior Golf Development Programme, the children met with other junior golfers, coaches and its committee members.

According to SGCC president, Shiak Vui Ming in a statement issued yesterday, the event also provided the participating children an opportunity to learn more about SGCC’s comprehensive junior development programme which is reputed to be one of the best in the country.

“In an effort to assist the state government to achieve its aspiration to make Sabah one of the powerhouses of golf in Malaysia, SGCC has decided to accept juniors from all our reciprocal clubs in Sabah and Labuan.

“Since the programme was initiated in 2016, four junior golfers aged below 12 years old had represented Sabah’s MSSM team to Kedah last March, namely David Mills, Benedict Wong, Angelina Hwong and Rachel Wong,” he said.

Apart from registration and briefings for new members who signed up, 3-hole and 6-hole golf challenge competitions were held for the juniors where the youngest participant was 5 years old.

Shiak concluded that the SGCC Junior Development Programme extends its invitation to all reciprocal clubs in Sabah and Labuan to join the programme to promote the sport’s development for the future.
