Sabah women collect four points on the road

KOTA KINABALU: It has been quite a weekend for the State women’s futsal team at the National Futsal League (NFL) after returning home with four points from the fourth week of the championship on Sunday.

After a comfortable 4-1 win over Kuala Lumpur Immigration on Saturday, they managed to pick up one point the following day as they were held to a two-all draw by Negeri Sembilan.

With the latest result, Sabah are third in the eight-team league on 15 points from four wins, three draws and a defeat.

Kuala Lumpur Felda United FC lead on 22 points, followed by Selangor United MPSJ, who inflicted Sabah’s only defeat to date, in second on 18 points.

The NFL resumed its fixtures over the weekend after a three-month break and Sabah despite travelling with a depleted squad made a stunning return with the huge win over Negeri Sembilan.

However, Sabah who were without six key players currently on national duty in the AFF Women Championship in Indonesia were a little unfortunate that they could not continue the fine form.

Against Negeri Sembilan, who they defeated 3-0 in their first meeting, they were caught trailing twice before settling for a draw.

Shereilyn Elly Pius equalised in the first half before A. Nuraziela Ali Jainal made sure the teams shared the spoils with a second-half strike.

Head coach Rosmadih Wasli was full of praise for the youngsters who showed their quality in the absence of the key players.

“I’m happy with the junior players who will represent Sabah in Sukma (Malaysia Games) in September. “They have shown much progress and improvement playing against the seniors,” he said when contacted yesterday.

Rosmadih went on to say that they would continue to train and work harder in their quest to achieve the best-possible best finish in the eight-team league competition.

Next, Sabah will take on PDRM (July 28) and Selangor United MPSJ (July 29). – FRANCIS XAVIER
