KOTA KINABALU: Sabah squash princess, Jessica Keng Jia Hui once again finished on top when she won the Girls’ Under-17 category at the Macau Junior Squash Open held at the Macau Squash Association Centre in Cotai, Macau on Sunday.

The teenage prodigy first seed wasted no time to keep her good momentum on track as she defeated second-seed, Cheryl Wing Sze Li of Hong Kong, 11-7, 11-8, 11-3 in the final.

Jessica was extremely happy to win another championship as she continued her good run of form recently, where she had picked up several other Tier 1 tournaments in recent weeks.

“Finishing as champion once again has shown the fruit of my hard training and gives me the confidence to improve as a better player in the future,” said the SMK Inanam student when contacted yesterday.

The 16-year-old did not face many problems in the tournament as three back-to-back victories gave her top spot in the GU17 category without even dropping a set.

Another two state junior players who also took part in the tournament were Kayden Liaw Juin Wuen who finished third in the Boys’ Under-19 category ahead of team-mate, Nicholas Tan Zheng Xin.

The two met in the third and fourth play-off match where Kayden defeated Nicholas in straight sets, 11-9, 11-7, 11-6, while Hong Kong’s Chi Ho Chan won the category.

Meanwhile, in another event, four state players competed in the Ohana National Squash Championship which was a Premier event held at Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.

Lai Wen Li recorded the highest finish for the state contingent where she secured fifth place overall in the Women’s Premier category when she defeated Negri Sembilan’s Ooi Kah Yan in the 5/6 playoff.

Sabah’s youngest professional player, Mohd Farez Izwan Mohd Mukhtar could only manage to finish 12th overall in the Men’s Premier category while the other two players, Duncan Lee and Yee Xing Ying performed averagely in the tournament.
