LAHAD DATU: Four foreigners were detained for attempting to cause injuries to marine policemen who were trying to arrest them for fish bombing activities in waters off Pulau Malampaya near here on Tuesday.

Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) Commander DCP Dato Hazani Ghazali said the marine policemen were on patrol in an unmarked boat when they spotted a suspicious pump boat about 0.5 nautical miles from their position at about 5.30pm, Hazani said.

The four suspects on the pump boat were carrying out fish bombing and they tried to escape on noticing the approaching marine policemen.

During the pursuit, they were seen throwing several bottles believed to be fish bombs and a sack containing their catch into the sea, he added.

One of the suspects was spotted throwing a burning object in the direction of the approaching marine police boat and exploded but it missed.

“None of the marine policemen was hurt in the incident,” Hazani said.

The marine policemen managed to intercept the pump boat and arrested four suspects, aged 25 to 32, believed to be foreigners.

They found two compressors on the pump boat and other gear. We believed some of the paraphernalia used for fish bombing had been dumped into the sea, he continued.

The suspects were arrested for endangering the safety of the marine policemen in a bid to deter them from discharging their duties.

The suspects were brought back to the marine police base along with the seized items estimated worth RM 3,480, Hazani said.

“The case has been referred to the Lahad Datu Criminal Investigation Department for investigation under Section 353 of the Penal Code, Hazani said.
